Here’s what most people don’t know:
All infrared heating pads work in the same way.
All FIR pads generate infrared rays through natural stones (Jade/Amethyst) heated by electricity.
It’s as simple as that.
So you’re probably wondering:
Why bother looking for infrared heating pad reviews? Let’s just pick the cheapest one and start enjoying the amazing benefits of infrared therapy!
But that would be a mistake.
There are a few important factors when you buy, that you may be missing:
- Safety (no EMF radiation!)
- Size (how large is your painful area?)
- Timer (because you can easily fall asleep on it)
Should you get the one with the Jade stones? Or perhaps the Amethyst crystals? Do the stones even matter? Do they emit EMF radiation? Are they safe?
Which is the best infrared heating pad and where you can you get it for the best price?
In this post we’ll address all of these factors, answer these questions and finally – and show you our #1 recommendation – the best infrared heating pad in the market.
Ready? Let’s go.
The Important Stuff When Choosing an Infrared Heating Pad
There is one thing in common with all FIR pads:
They all produce some degree of the long wave far infrared heat (you can vary and shorten these rays the higher the temperature is turned up.
As the FIR rays pass through jade stones/tourmaline stones/amethyst crystals, they emit long wave far infrared rays (8-12 microns) that penetrate 6-8 inches deep through your body.
This deep penetration not only benefits the muscles on the surface (like regular electric pads), but also all your cells, including blood vessels, lymph glands and nerves in the deepest parts of your body.
This results in science-backed amazing benefits such as fast pain relief, deep sweat which eliminates toxins (easy full body detox), increased circulation, lowered blood pressure, fast and natural inflammation healing and the list goes on and on.
So, what’s the difference between all the FIR heating pads on the market?
Here’s the deal:
The size of the FIR pad you choose is important because the larger the pad, the bigger the treatment area and the more powerful it is.
If your want an infrared pad for pain relief, consider the size of your problem area.
If you need it to cover your entire back, for example, you’ll need a medium size or larger FIR pad. If you only need it for your lower back, a small size pad will be enough.
2. The Stones
Some infrared pads use Jade stones to emit the infrared heat, some use Amethysts crystals and some use a combination of Jade and Tourmaline stones.
Raw Jade stones are the most popular ones, especially in Asia. Raw jade amplifies far infrared about 5 to 6 inches into the body.
I’ve learned that Jade has more fluence and amplifies a wider surface area of the far infrared, while the Amethyst crystals have less fluence but amplifies the FIR rays slightly deeper into the body.
Most Jade FIR heating pads have about 10-12 pounds of Jade stones (like the highly recommended UTK Infrared Heating Pad).
The most popular Amethyst pad (the original Biomat), on the other hand, has about 19 pounds of Amethyst.
The extra weight and surface of the Amethyst pad adds fluence and keeps the deep penetration.
The Biomat is almost fully covered with crushed Amethyst.
The UTK FIR pad uses Jade stones, which can be clearly seen through the outer padding.
Beware of infrared heating pads that have jade that has been treated chemically to preserve it (treated jade stones do not emit FIR as they should and less negative ions are produced).
Some Jade out there is treated to get rid of discolorations by artificial polymers to make it more clear and make it more colorful.
The Thermotex FIR pad, for example, does not use any kind of stones at all. The FIR rays are delivered through carbon fibers, much like most Infrared saunas.
2. Negative ions
Here’s why negative ions are anything but negative:
Negative ions are molecules with an extra electron that your body can absorb. They’re found in abundance at waterfalls, mountains, beaches and in the air after a rainstorm.
(Many people buy waterfalls to place in their bedroom. The constant flowing of water from the fountain generates negative ions.)
Numerous scientific studies indicate that once they reach our bloodstream, they produce biochemical reactions that help calm and relieve stress, alleviate depression, boost our daytime energy and increase improve our immune system.
Also, the more negative ions the body has the more the positively charged toxins can come out of your body.
The UTK FIR pad had the highest negative ions coming out of it based on my ion meter (yes, I have one of those…).
But, many people just spray some salted water on their FIR pads or mats, to generate more negative ions. The higher the temperature is up though, the more spraying you’ll have to do.
The Thermotex FIR pad, for example, does not give negative ions.
3. Safety – EMF Radiation
Unfortunately, some infrared heating pads emit a lot of the dangerous EMF radiation, which should be avoided at all cost if you want to keep your health (can cause cancer according to some studies).
For example, I’ve tested the Thermotex far infrared pad and found that it does emit EMF, while the UTK and the Biomat emit a minimal if any.
This is why I do not recommend the Thermotex FIR pads.
Comfort is not luxury when it comes to a FIR heating pad.
Comfort is very important, because you don’t want to buy a pad that feels like a bed of stones or a marble floor.
It will make you stop using it and miss out on the incredible health benefits, right?
Also, know that some infrared heating pads are flexible and can be rolled up and conform to different body parts (Like the Therasage medium size pad and the full body mat), and some can not be folded and are mostly good for back pain.
The Biomat, for example, was not very comfortable to lie on and definitely hard to sleep on until the manufacturer added the Quantum pad.
By far the most comfortable far infrared pad is the UTK pad, without any blankets or cushions on it.
The medium size can be folded and rolled around the elbow or knee if needed, and also large enough to cover most of your back or legs.
For sleep purposes, the Biomat with the new Quantum pad wins. If you want to sleep on your FIR mat every day – Go for the Biomat.
5. FDA Approval
Some Infrared pads are approved and found safe by the FDA. Both the UTK and the Biomat, which are the 2 most popular ones, are FDA approved.
Looking for infrared heating pad reviews before you make a buying decision was a smart move.
Now you know the differences between FIR heating pads and why they are important.
The UTK infrared pads use Jade stones, emit minimal EMF radiation if any and the medium or large sizes can be folded around parts of your body but also allow for a good sweat and a full body detox.
I recommend buying them only on Amazon, due to their reliable return policy and money back guarantee.
